Christian Education

Sunday School
Emmanuel offers a religious education program for children from pre-school to confirmation age. This program is held at the church from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM almost every Sunday during the school year. Our program is overseen by our Christian Formation Director, Karla Klotz, but is staffed and facilitated by our parishioners who work in teams and rotate among different classrooms.

Emmanuel offers young children a “hands on” approach to Christianity, using music, art projects, drama, and even cooking to teach children about the tenets of our faith and the lessons of the Bible, in the hope that youngsters will view their religion as an integral part of their lives and experience. This year, we began their education with a special program which helped the children to understand our special relationship with our Sudanese companion parish which included the creation of prayer flags (which were given to that parish), African music and the presentation of prayers written by our children for our Sudanese brothers and sisters in need. This year we have also studied the Creation story, the story of Moses and, during the church’s great seasons such as Advent and Lent, we focus on the liturgies of those seasons.

Christmas Pageant
Every year, Emmanuel children delight us all on Christmas Eve with the Christmas pageant, a liturgy play which tells us the story of Christ’s birth as only children can. The children also lead the music and play in the orchestra which performs traditional Christmas music.

Children’s Chapel
For those children who are too young to participate in the entire 10:00 AM liturgy, Emmanuel offers a children’s chapel during the first half hour of that liturgy service. Children hear the gospel in terms accessible to them. They then process into the church to join their families at the time that parishioners exchange the peace with each other.

Wednesday Evening Bible Study
Deacon John Dolan hosts a regular Wednesday evening Bible Study at his home at 7:30 P.M. Participants discuss scripture readings in a relaxed setting where opinions are shared and respected.
